Volkswagen GTI is a model of small family cars, part of the Volkswagen Golf series that was introduced in 1974 by the famous German automobile manufacturer Volkswagen. Volkswagen Golf was manufactured in seven generations and has won numerous awards, including the World Car of the Year Award in 2009.
The first Volkswagen Golf GTI “hot hatch” was launched in 1976, as a part of the first generation Golfs. Later, a body badge emblem “GTI” appeared in the third generation (1991 – 2002). A Volkswagen Golf GTI version was presented during the fifth generation (2003 – 2009) – it was a hatchback with turbocharged version of the 2.0 TFSI engine.
In 2007, Volkswagen Golf GTI W12 was launched. This model was rear wheel drive and featured a twin-turbocharged engine with a six-speed automatic gearbox. In order to better the car's grip, the W12 engine was positioned in the middle of the vehicle. Better handling was provided as well, thanks to the rear spoiler.
The GTI model, part of the sixth Golf's generation (2008 – 2012) came with a 150 kW (200 hp) turbocharged I-4 TSI gasoline engine with 6-speed automatic or 6-speed manual transmission in either a 3- or 5-door configuration. The newest GTI is petrol-powered and is available in a 162 kW (217 hp) turbocharged 2.0 liter four-cylinder engine. Volkswagen Golf GTI Mk7 has won the 2015 Yahoo! Car of the Year award.
