In 2002 a joint venture between Toyota and General Motors has resulted in a new line of compact hatchback vehicles, called Toyota Matrix (also known as Toyota Corolla Matrix). The Matrix was produced by Toyota Motor Manufacturing Canada in Cambridge, Ontario. The history of Toyota Matrix includes two generations.
The first generation (2003–2008) was built on the Toyota Corolla platform and came with two 1.8 L four-cylinder engine options. Three types of transmission were offered as well – 4-speed automatic, 5-speed C59 manual and 6-speed C60 manual transmission. The first generation includes three main trim levels: Standard, XR and XRS. The standard models were available with some basic features only. The XR model was a mid-grade trim level – it was equipped with some additional features, such as color-matched mirrors and door handles, a leather-wrapped steering wheel, and a panic button on the key fob. Matrix XRS was the high grade model of this generation. It featured four-wheel disc brakes and six speakers, anti-lock brakes with Electronic Brakeforce Distribution, 16-inch alloy wheels, and cruise control.
The second generation was launched in 2009. It came with three trim levels for the USA and four trim levels for Canada. This final generation was also available with two inline-four engine options and three types of transmission – 4-speed automatic, 5-speed automatic and 5-speed manual transmission. A variety of safety features were added as well – like side torso airbags, side curtain airbags, anti-lock braking and electronic brakeforce distribution.
