In 2012, the Japanese automakers Toyota and Subaru have jointly developed a new line of sports cars, called "The 86 Series". Later, the companies started manufacturing the models from the 86 Series solely. As a result, this series now includes three distinct brands – Toyota 86 (also known as "GT86" in Europe and "FT86" in Nicaragua and Jamaica), Subaru BRZ, and Scion FR-S. The 86 Series comes with a front-engine, rear-wheel-drive layout and 2+2 seating. Plus, the 86 Series features 2-door coupé body style and 101.2 inches wheelbase. The series is also available with a 2.0 L 4U-GSE / FA20 boxer engine and 6-speed manual or automatic transmission.
The nameplate "BRZ" comes from "Boxer engine, Rear-wheel drive, Zenith". Subaru BRZ features a stylish design with distinct front fascia, grille and headlight assembly. The BRZ also comes with a modified suspension set. At the beginning, there were three versions: the Base RA model and two main trim levels – R and S (in North America they are also known as "Premium" and "Limited" respectively).
In 2013, a new model was presented on the Japanese market – Subaru BRZ tS. The tS comes with an upgraded suspension setup, 18 inch silver BBS wheels, STI body kit and front spoiler, a bigger drive shaft, and more extra features. One year later, Subaru BRZ was upgraded with a new key fob and two additional colors. In 2015, a limited edition, called "Hyper Blue" was launched – it is provided with a manual transmission and a variety of cosmetic modifications, including said blue paint. Despite its short history, Subaru BRZ has enjoyed high popularity and has won the Canada's Auto123 2013 Award for Best Sports Car.
