In 1962, Pontiac – the performance division of the legendary automobile manufacturer General Motors (GM) – has introduced a new line of automobiles called "Grand Prix". Through its long history, the Pontiac Grand Prix was manufactured in seven generations.

The first generation (1962–1968) featured a 2-door coupe body style and FR layout. It was based on the B-body platform and came with 120 in wheelbase (121 in for the 1966 model). At first, Pontiac Grand Prix was equipped with Bonneville's 303 hp (226 kW) 389 cu in (6.4 L) V8 engine with four-barrel carburetor and dual exhausts; however, more engine choices became available later. There were three transmission options as well: 3-speed manual, 4-speed manual and 3-speed automatic transmission.

The second generation (1969–1972) was based on the GM G-Body platform. This generation featured a 2-door hardtop body style and shorter wheelbase. The Grand Prix vehicles from this period were lighter and came with a nice, sporty interior. The third generation started in 1973. It was based on the A-body platform and was bigger, heavier, with some design improvements like a fixed opera window and a new instrument panel.

The fourth generation (1978–1987) came with a new standard, Buick-built V6 engine and 3-speed Turbo-Hydramatic transmission. The wheelbase was shortened to 108 in. The fifth generation was released in 1988 and was based on the W-body 1st Gen platform. It featured transverse front-engine, front-wheel drive layout and was offered in two body styles – 2-door coupe and 4-door sedan.

The sixth generation (1996–2003) was provided with a little bit longer wheelbase, new racy appearance and a 4-speed automatic transmission. Several engine options were available as well. The seventh generation was launched in 2004. It was based on the W-body 3rd Gen platform and came as a 4-door sedan only. This final generation featured a 4-speed automatic transmission and 3.8L V6 or 5.3L V8 engine. Although the Grand Prix enjoyed positive reviews, it was replaced by the G8 model in 2008. However, 2009 model year was the final year for all Pontiac models, because GM has announced that the Pontiac brand will be discontinued.
