In 1999 the Japanese multinational automobile manufacturer Nissan introduced a new line of SUVs, called Xterra. Nissan Xterra is built on Nissan’s F-Alpha platform and was manufactured in two generations.
The first generation (1999 – 2005) came with a two-box design with a raised rear roofline. The first Xterra models were offered in two trim levels and were available with a 5-speed manual transmission, and steel wheels. In 2002 the Xterra was upgraded with new design, better engine and additional features, such as side-curtain airbags and a tire pressure monitoring system.
The second generation was launched in 2005. This newest generation is larger and came with variable valve timing fitted 4.0 L VQ40DE engine. In 2009 the exterior of the Xterra was greatly improved and new color options became available. In 2014 the Xterra was upgraded again and was equipped with a variety of new features, like NissanConnect with Navigation system, new 16-inch aluminum-alloy wheels, standard Bluetooth Hands-free Phone System and many more.
During its history, Nissan Xterra has become very popular and has won several awards, including the 2000 North American Truck of the Year Award. However, in 2015 Nissan Motors announced that the Xterra will be discontinued in the end of 2015.
