Thirty years ago the Japanese automaker Nissan started producing a new line of CUVs, called "Pathfinder". Nissan Pathfinder is based on Nissan's compact pickup truck platform and was manufactured in four generations.
The first generation (1985–1995) was built on the WD21 platform and came as a two-door SUV. The first Pathfinders were equipped with both 2WD and manually engaged 4WD configurations. This generation also featured a 2.4 L four cylinder engine, but more engine options became available later. In 1990 a new, 4-door model of Pathfinder replaced the 2-door version. The second generation was released in 1995. It had a new, more rounded styling. The body on frame construction was replaced with a unibody construction. Pathfinder’s size was increased as well. This generation was also available with better engine and 5-speed manual or 4-speed automatic transmission.
The third generation (2004–2012) was built on the Nissan F-Alpha platform and featured a body on frame construction again. Four engine options were provided: 4.0 L VQ40DE V6, 5.6 L VK56DE V8, as well as 2.5 L YD25DDTi I4 Turbodiesel and 3.0 L V9X V6 turbodiesel engines for the export models. The fourth generation was launched in 2012 and utilizes the modern Nissan D platform. This newest generation returns to the unibody design again and features CVT transmission. The Gasoline models are equipped with a 3.5 L VQ35DE V6 engine, while the Hybrid models come with a 2.5 L QR25DER I4 engine and an electric motor paired to a compact Lithium-ion (Li-ion) battery.
