In 1999, the Japanese automaker Mazda introduced a new series of minivans, called "Premacy". Mazda Premacy has been manufactured in three generations. Since the second generation, Premacy is called "Mazda5" outside Japan.
The second generation of Premacy and first generation of Mazda5 (2005–2010) featured FF layout and a compact MPV body style. This generation had 108 inches wheelbase and was based on the Mazda BK platform. Mazda5 came with four engine options: 1.8 L MZR I4, 2.0 L MZR I4, 2.3 L MZR I4, and 2.0 L MZ-CD Diesel I4 engine. Four transmission types were available as well – 4-speed automatic, 5-speed automatic, 5-speed manual and 6-speed manual transmission. In North America Mazda5 offers space for six passengers by utilizing three rows of seats, with two seats per row. On the other markets Mazda5 provides room for 7 passengers.
Mazda launched the third generation of Premacy and second generation of Mazda5 in 2010. It uses the Mazda CW platform and features slightly increased wheelbase. This generation came with two new engine types – 2.0 L SKYACTIV-G (PE-VPS) I4 and 2.5 L MZR I4 engine. Mazda also offered three transmission types: 6-speed manual, 5-speed automatic, and 6-speed automatic transmission.
