In 2000, the South Korean automaker Kia introduced a new series of mid-size cars, called "Optima". Kia Optima features 4-door sedan body style and front engine, front wheel-drive layout. During its 16-year history, Kia Optima was manufactured in four generations.
The first generation (2000–2005) was released as a rebadged variant of the Hyundai Sonata. Kia Optima was based on the Hyundai-Kia Y4 platform and came with 110 inches wheelbase. This generation was equipped with 5-speed manual or 4-speed automatic transmission. Three engine options were available as well: 2.4 L Sirius II I4, 2.5 L Delta V6, and 2.7 L Delta V6 engine.
The second generation (2005–2010) is also called "Kia Magentis". This generation came with 107 inches wheelbase. The second generation was also offered with more engine and transmission options. In 2008, the Optima model was upgraded with some additional exterior and interior modifications.
The third generation started in 2010. This generation came with much sleeker, sportier profile and increased wheelbase. The Optima vehicles from this period featured 6-speed manual or automatic transmission. In 2010, Kia presented a new, hybrid version that features very low fuel consumption.
In 2016, the fourth generation was launched. It utilizes the 2015 Hyundai Sonata platform and comes with a completely new design. The new Kia Optima is equipped with a 6-speed automatic or 7-speed dual-clutch automatic transmission. The wheelbase is slightly increased and new engine options are provided. This newest generation is available with a variety of modern features, such as: keyless entry, an A/M-F/M stereo with SIRIUS-XM Satellite Radio, single-disc CD/MP3 player, alloy wheels, premium cloth seating surfaces, and many more.
