In 1985 the South Korean automaker Hyundai introduced a new line of mid-size, 4-door sedan cars, named "Sonata". Hyundai Sonata was manufactured in seven generations.
The first generation (1985–1987) was offered in two trim options in Korea. The first Sonatas were equipped with inline-four engines (1.6, 1.8 or 2.0 L) and 5-speed manual or 4-door automatic transmission. Hyundai Sonata also came with various features, such as: cruise control, power seats, head lamp washers, power brakes, electric operated adjustable side mirrors and chrome bumper trims. The second generation (1988–1993) featured some exterior improvements and was released in two trim levels in the US market – GL (with 2.4 L and 2.0 L engines) and GLS (with 3.0 L engine).
The third generation started in 1993 and was built on the Hyundai-Kia Y3 platform. It came with three engine options and some improvements in the front and rear. The next generation (1998–2004) used the Hyundai-Kia Y4 platform and was called "EF Series". The fifth generation (2004–2009) was classified as a large car and came with new engine options, including Nissan’s first all-aluminum I4 engine. This generation was also available with a variety of features, like anti-lock braking system, electronic stability control, traction control system as well as six airbags.
The sixth generation (2009–2014) featured a new, direct-injection 2.4-liter four-cylinder engine for the US market. This resulted in superior fuel economy and extra power. The sixth generation Sonata was also equipped with a 6-speed manual or automatic transmission. The seventh generation was launched in 2014 – with more conservative approach and four engine options. The new Hyundai Sonata comes with 6-speed automatic or 7-speed dual-clutch automatic transmission and a variety of modern features. A new, plug-in hybrid version was released in 2015 as well.
