In 1990 the South Korean automaker Hyundai started producing a new line of compact cars, named "Hyundai Elantra" (also known as "Hyundai Avante"). The Elantra was manufactured in five generations.
The first generation (1990–1995) had a codename J1 and came with 4-door sedan body style. The first Elantra models featured 5-speed manual or 4-speed automatic transmission. Three engine options were offered as well – 1.5 L I4 (petrol), 1.6 L I4 (petrol) and 1.8 L I4 (petrol) engine. In 1995 the second generation started – it was available as a sedan and station wagon. A new 2.0-liter engine option was provided. The 1999 model was upgraded with new grilles.
The third generation (2000–2006) was presented with the codename XD and was built on the Hyundai-Kia J3 platform. Additional features were available – such as front and front-side airbags, air conditioning, power locks, power windows and power steering. The fourth generation (2006–2010) had codename HD and featured a "coke bottle" styling. For better fuel economy new engine options were provided – 1.6 L Gamma I4 (gasoline), 2.0 L Beta II I4 (gasoline) and 1.6 L U-Line I4 (t/c diesel) engine.
The fifth generation was launched in 2011 and has a codename MD. This final generation comes with 6-speed manual or automatic transmission. Three new engine options are offered – 1.6 L Gamma I4 (petrol), 1.8 L Nu I4 (petrol) and 2.0 L Nu I4 (petrol) engine. Thanks to these engines and the low drag coefficient, superior fuel economy is guaranteed. The fifth generation Hyundai Elantra is offered in two trim levels – GLS and Limited.
