In 1997 Dodge introduced a new series of sport utility vehicles (SUVs), called "Durango". Dodge Durango was manufactured in three generations.
The first generation (1997–2003) was classified as a mid-sized SUV and came with a body-on-frame construction. The first Durango vehicles were built on the Chrysler DN platform and were offered with a 4-speed or 5-speed automatic transmission. The second generation (2004–2009) was classified as a full-sized SUV and featured a new design, more similar to Dodge Ram pickup. This generation was slightly bigger and had an eight-seat capacity, thanks to its third-row bench with three seats. The second generation was available with four engine options as well as 4-speed and 5-speed automatic transmissions again.
The third generation was launched in 2010 and utilizes the same platform as the Jeep Grand Cherokee. This newest generation is available with two engine options and three types of automatic transmission – 5-speed, 6-speed and 8-speed (for the 2014 model). The new Dodge Durango is offered in several distinct trim levels and comes with a variety of modern features.
