CHEVROLET IMPALA

The history of Chevrolet Impala has begun in 1958, when Chevrolet introduced a new line of full-size automobiles, called "Impala" (the name comes from the African antelope Impala). Chevrolet Impala was manufactured in ten generations.

The first Chevrolet Impala was created in 1958 and was based on the GM B platform. The first generation featured FR layout and was offered with two body styles: 2-door convertible and 2-door hardtop. The earliest Impalas were also available with three taillights each side. The second generation (1959–1960) came with a refreshed design with longer wheelbase and a new X-frame chassis. In 1961, the third generation started. It was built on the B-body platform and had a new body styling with more trim and boxy appearance. This generation was provided with five engine options and 3-speed manual or 4-speed manual Powerglide transmission.

The fourth generation (1965–1970) came with updated design and modified full-coil suspension. The next generation (1971–1976) featured a larger size with new styling and catalytic converters. In 1977, the sixth generation Impala was released. It was shorter and narrower, but taller compared to the previous generation. The sixth generation was equipped with a 3-speed automatic transmission as a standard and an optional 4-speed automatic transmission.

In 1977, Chevrolet Impala was discontinued. However, the Impala has returned in 1994 with a seventh generation. It came with a 5.7 L (350 cu in) LT1 V8 engine and 4-speed 4L60-E automatic transmission. Two years later, the Impala was discontinued again. But in 2000 Chevrolet started manufacturing Impala again. Thus, the eight generation has begun. It was based on a new, W-body 2nd Gen platform and was offered as a 4-door sedan with transverse front-engine, front-wheel drive layout. The eight generation featured 4-speed automatic transmission and three engine options.

The ninth generation was launched in 2006. It was built on the W-body 3rd Gen platform and has 110.5 in wheelbase. The Impalas from this generation are provided with 4-speed or 6-speed automatic transmission. The tenth generation was released in 2013 as a 2014 model. It is based on the GM Epsilon II platform and features a slightly longer wheelbase. The new Chevrolet Impala is equipped with 6-speed automatic transmission and three engine options: 2.4 L LUK Ecotec I4 eAssist, 2.5 L LCV Ecotec I4, and 3.6 L LFX V6 engine.

During its long history, Chevrolet Impala has become very popular and has won several awards, including Motor Trend’s 1977 Car of the Year Award.
