In 1964, Chevrolet has launched a new line of mid-sized muscle cars, called "Chevelle". The Chevelle is based on the A-body platform and features FR layout. Chevrolet Chevelle has been manufactured in three generations.
The first generation (1964–1967) came in a variety of body styles: two-door hardtop coupe, sedan, station wagon and convertible; as well as four-door sedans, hardtop and station wagon. The first generation was also provided with 112 inches wheelbase. Four transmission types were available – 3-speed manual, 4-speed manual, 2-speed automatic, and 3-speed automatic transmission. Chevrolet also offered a wide range of engine options.
The second generation (1968–1972) featured a new design. The Chevelle models from this period had a sculpted body with tapered front fenders and a rounded beltline. In 1969, the exterior was improved with a new front-end styling. Another upgrade was made in 1970 – the construction was enhanced with more sheet metal body parts and the interior was updated.
The third generation was launched in 1973. Only three body styles remained – 2-door coupe, 4-door sedan, and 4-door station wagon. The coupe featured 112 inches wheelbase, while the sedan and the wagon had 116 inches wheelbase. The third generation came with new chassis design, improved front and rear suspension, new shock absorber location, and superior front suspension geometry. Three transmission types were offered in this generation – 3-speed manual, 4-speed manual, and 3-speed automatic transmission.
Chevelle enjoyed high popularity and is considered as one of Chevrolet's most successful nameplates. Nonetheless, Chevelle series was discontinued in 1978 and replaced by its own top trim level – Chevrolet Malibu.
