In 1999 the German Automobile manufacturer BMW started producing a line of midsize luxury crossover SUVs, named "X5". It features a front engine, four wheel drive layout and was manufactured in three generations.
The first generation (1999–2006) was called "E53" and had 111.0 in. wheelbase. BMW E53 X5 came with five engine options and four types of transmission – 5-speed manual, 5-speed automatic, 6-speed manual, and 6-speed automatic transmission. The X5 was also provided with a wide range of new features: Hill Descent system and Off Road Engine Management system, Radio function, Navigation system, Television and Telecommunications systems, and a very flexible automotive computer system. The first BMW X5 vehicles can be improved even further with some modern technologies, like Bluetooth phone connectivity.
The second generation (2006–2013) was named "E70" and came with longer wheelbase and some new features, such as BMW's iDrive system. The seating capacity of this generation’s models can be increased to 7 passengers, thanks to the optional third row seat. The second generation features 6-speed automatic or 8-speed ZF 8HP automatic transmission. Several new engine options are available as well.
The third generation was launched in 2013 with name "F15". Both the chassis and the wheelbase remained the same. At first, the new BMW X5 came with three engine options: a 450 hp V8 petrol engine and two six-cylinder in-line diesel engines, but more engines became available later.
