The first Alpine sports cars were manufactured in 1955, with Alpine using Renault rear-mounted engines in its automobiles. The petrol crisis in the 1970s caused a drastic reduction in the number of vehicles Alpine produced, and the firm never completely recovered from this, with production coming to a halt in 1995.
However, Renault plans to start distributing Alpine vehicles again, starting in 2017. Renault recently unveiled a new Alpine Vision concept at the 86th Geneva Motor Show. The new Alpine Vision is a coupe that features an aluminum chassis, a turbocharged 1.8-liter four-cylinder mid-mounted engine and rear-wheel drive. It will weigh less than 1,100kg.
Alpine was very successful in sports car racing in the 1970s, taking the first three places in the Monte Carlo rally in 1971. It was also active in Formula One and Formula Two racing.
Alpine street models included the A106, A108, A110, A310, GTA/A610 and Vision. The company produced 15 racing models: Alpine M63, Alpine M64, Alpine M65, Alpine A210, Alpine A220, Alpine A360 (Formula Three), Alpine A364, Alpine A367 (Formula Two), Alpine A440, Alpine A441, Alpine A442, Alpine A443, Alpine A450, Alpine A460 and Alpine A470.
